After a long and hard battled eight years, Boys’ Latin has finally climbed on top of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association “A” Conference. Arguably the most difficult high school lacrosse playoff competition in the country, the Lakers last won the MIAA title in 2006.
Like its championship eight years prior, Latin went undefeated all year en route to the program’s 10th league championship. The victory comes after years of tough seasons, including losing in the championship game in three of the last four seasons.
Boys’ Latin, the 1st seed in the playoffs, faced 2nd seed St. Paul’s on Friday, May 16 to decide the victor of the MIAA league. After the Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first, the two teams evened out for the rest of the half, leading to an 8-5 score line.
After an even start to the third, Latin finished the quarter strongly, taking a 12-8 lead. Running with their momentum in the fourth, Hunter Moreland won the faceoff, carried the ball down, and scored in the opening seconds of the final quarter. On the next faceoff, Moreland did the same thing, scoring twice in the first 21 seconds of the quarter.
St. Paul’s responded with three straight goals, cutting the Lakers’ lead down to three at 14-11. The Crusaders could not keep up the intensity and Boys’ Latin netted three more, leading to the game’s final score of 17-11.
Junior Devin Shewell paced the Lakers with four goals and two assists. Senior Shack Stanwick, widely viewed as the top high school prospect, marked two goals and two assists. Along with his strong performance at the faceoff mark, Hunter Moreland scored three goals in the game.
Latin’s perfect season secures the Lakers as the No. 1 rank in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, a position they held all season. Heading into the offseason, the Lakers can hold their heads up high, finally winning a long awaited title.
